Oval track modified roadsters, considered the forerunners of modern super modifieds, were raced primarily on the west coast and were most poplar during the pre-World War II era. The Ace was built using period correct parts and a multitude of "one off" custom fabbed components. Underneath the narrowed 26 Ford body is a chassis constructed of 2 x 3 rectangular tubing and various sizes of round tubing. Both the front and rear suspension is quarter -elliptical and is located by custom made radius rods. The cowl steering is a modified 40 Ford box. Weighing just 1400 lbs, it is powered by a 1937 flathead Ford V-8 60.
In the golden age of short track racing, it was not uncommon for a race car to have a symbol or name instead of a number. The Ace of Spades theme pays homage to a NASCAR modified legend from the east coast; Al DeAngelo, who ran an Ace of Spades stock car in the 50's. Had he raced on the west coast during the pre-war era, would there have been an Ace of Spades modified roadster at say...Oakland Stadium? Hmmmmm.
